Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has urged Johannesburg residents to vote in local elections for leaders who will restore accountability and effective service delivery.
For many years, communities in Johannesburg have experienced declining municipal services, deteriorating infrastructure, and growing inequality that directly affects schools, learners, and families.
Poor service delivery, such as unreliable electricity, unsafe streets, water interruptions, and poorly maintained public facilities, creates an environment that undermines education and the wellbeing of young people.
As activists committed to building a society where every child can learn in a safe and supportive environment, we believe that leadership matters.
We therefore call on residents to consider supporting Helen Zille in the next local government elections.
Zille has demonstrated through her public service that she is willing to engage directly with ordinary people and listen to the concerns of communities.
Recently, Zille joined ordinary supporters at a tavern to watch a football match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
While some politicians choose to watch such events from exclusive VIP sections, this simple act symbolised a leader who is comfortable among everyday South Africans and willing to share in the experiences of ordinary residents.

Our call is not based on symbolism alone. It is rooted in the urgent need for ethical leadership, responsive governance, and a commitment to rebuilding trust between citizens and government.
Vote responsibly, Johannesburg!
The future of our learners depends on municipalities that function properly and place communities first.
We therefore urge the residents of Johannesburg to vote responsibly and support leadership that prioritises service delivery, transparency, and the dignity of all people, regardless of background.
