Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) says it will intensify law enforcement operations across the province to ensure that holidaymakers return safely from the festive season.

On Sunday, major routes in the province are expected to be busy as holidaymakers may be returning back to the province.
The heightened traffic police visibility is aimed at ensuring road safety and reducing road crashes along the major routes in the province.
To date, a total of two-hundred and ninety people have lost their lives due to road fatalities in Gauteng since the beginning of the festive season.

Majority of the of fatalities are as a result of pedestrian jaywalking, unsafe overtaking, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
The Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, Sello Maremane says that the traffic police will continue to conduct intensified law enforcement operations to curb lawlessness, ensure that motorists adhere to the road rules while eliminating criminal elements.
“The Gauteng Traffic Police together with other law enforcement officials will be on the ground to ensure that everyone is safe.

“Road users must be vigilant, prioritise safety and look out for pedestrians who may attempt to cross the road on busy routes. Together we can reduce road crashes by obeying the rules of the road” Maremane said.
Major routes that are expected to be busy include:
• N1 Polokwane to Pretoria • N3 Durban to Johannesburg • N1 Bloemfontein to Johannesburg • N4 Emalahleni to Pretoria • N12 Potchefstroom to Johannesburg • R573 Pretoria Moloto Road amongst others
