The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has announced the commencement of Human Rights Month this March, held under the poignant theme “Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real”.
The 66th anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre, a South African liberation turning point, marks when apartheid forces killed 69 and injured hundreds protesting for freedom of movement on March 21, 1960.
Gauteng MEC Matome Chiloane said Sharpeville is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolising the global fight against oppression.
“On March 21, provincial leaders from the Sedibeng and Emfuleni Municipalities will join victims’ families and survivors of the Sharpeville massacre to commemorate the event.
“Together, they will honour those who sacrificed their lives and celebrate three decades of progress since the adoption of our Constitution.
“The year 2026 is a milestone year, marking 30 years since the signing of the Bill of Rights into law; the Constitution remains the cornerstone and ultimate safeguard of our democracy and freedoms.
“Gauteng is dedicated to upholding dignity, equality, and social justice, demonstrated through concrete actions focused on improving essential services like water, healthcare, and electricity,” he remarked.
Furthermore, the MEC stated that the province emphasises inclusive economic growth, positioning the township economy and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as crucial drivers for provincial development.
According to Chiloane, these core priorities, aimed at tackling daily issues concerning safety and infrastructure, were central to the Premier’s recent State of the Province Address.
Human Rights Film Festival
Meanwhile, a month-long programme has been curated to educate, inspire, and foster social cohesion.
Key highlights include survivor storytelling from the 1960 massacre, the Sharpeville Human Rights Film Festival, the Cuito Cuanavale Battle commemoration, and dialogues on reconciliation and restitution at Constitution Hill.
The MEC stressed the vital need for citizens to grasp the significance of our history and 21 March.

He added, “Engaging with these events builds a province and nation where human rights are actively respected, celebrated, and defended daily, not just laws.
“The Gauteng Provincial Government invites all residents to participate in these events as we reflect on our journey from a divided past to a shared, dignified future.”
