The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has expelled its KwaZulu-Natal premier candidate and Youth league president Bonginkosi Khanyile from the party.
This comes after the former Fees Must Fall activist was seen at Umkhonto weSizwe(MK) political party rally where he addressed the gathered crowd alongside former president Jacob Zuma.
Despite apologising for his appearance, the party leadership has decided that it is not acceptable for any leader to appear without consultation at an event of a rival political party, the PA’s deputy secretary-general Meshe Habana said.
“Khanyile’s appearance was used by PA detractors to suggest that the PA is affiliated with MK in some way and that Khanyile was endorsing the party, particularly because Khanyile was accompanied to the event by PA supporters wearing our party’s regalia.
“Khanyile’s actions have brought both himself and the party into disrepute in a manner that unfortunately requires firmest and most decisive of responses,” she expressed.
Habana stated that accordingly, the party president Gayton McKenzie and deputy president Kenny Kunene have expelled Khanyile from the PA.

She added; “An announcement of who the new premier candidate will be shall follow in due course. The youth league also has a strong crop of young leaders from whom an inspiring young leader shall be chosen.”
Meanwhile, Sunday World reports that the ANC is “hunting down” party members who have allegedly joined the newly-formed MK Party.
The publication further claim to have seen a communique purported to be from the office of eThekwini ANC regional secretary instructing branches to disclose the MK Party movements and members who have joined the splinter grouping.
Reads the communique in part: “Report on the MK impact. Number of people who have joined MK or are seen mobilising for it in your branch. Also provide [a] report on ANC structures mobilising for the MK.”
