The 39-year-old is poised to take on the prestigious role of head coach at Libyan giants Al Ittihad SC.

‎The move follows the club’s decision to end its agreement with Tunisian coach Khaled Ben Yahia, while national coach Moaz Aboud had been temporarily in charge of the team during the past period.

In a statement issued, MC Alger’s management officially confirmed the activation of a contract clause that enables coach Mokwena to exit the team.

This decision was made after a meeting where the coach expressed his desire to conclude his time with the club. The clause stipulates that the financial aspects will be managed by the club, covering two months’ salaries for Mokwena should he decide to leave.

This exit comes during a challenging period for MC Alger, who, despite being at the top of the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 since the season’s early rounds, faced setbacks including a recent 3-2 defeat to CR Belouizdad in the Algerian Cup and elimination from the CAF Champions League.

Mokwena’s recent departure from MC Alger comes after a notably successful yet short tenure characterised by winning the 2025 Algerian Super Cup.

His swift movement through North African leagues has enhanced his standing as one of the most in-demand coaching talents on the continent, a trajectory that began following his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2024.

Mokwena mentored a football team based in Algiers, which has played 19 games and accumulated a total of 43 points, placing them at the top of the standings.

In comparison, the second-placed team, Constantine, has played 23 games and has secured 38 points.

Farewell message to MC Alger

Mokwena expressed gratitude, respect, and emotion on his Instagram while saying farewell to MC Alger.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to be part of such a historic club and to share this journey with incredible players, dedicated staff, and the most passionate supporters.

“Football brings many moments, but the bonds created through honesty, hard work, and shared belief are the ones that stay with you forever.

“To the players and staff—thank you for your commitment, your effort, and the spirit we tried to build together every day. To the supporters of MC Alger – your passion is extraordinary.

“The atmosphere you created, especially at our home stadium, is something I will never forget. Hearing you sing ‘Ballon et Cinéma’ will always remain one of the most emotional and beautiful memories of my career.

“Although this chapter comes to an end with sadness, I leave with deep gratitude and humility for having been part of this family, even for a short time.

“I wish the club, the players, and all the supporters continued success and many proud moments ahead. With sincere respect and thanks,” he wrote.
