Durban City Football Club has announced the departure of head coach Gavin Hunt from the team by mutual consent.
As per the KwaZulu-Natal based-outfit, the decision follows a review of the soccer strategy undertaken by the Board of Directors, which determined a refreshed method is necessary to attain the Club’s goals.
“This was a mutual decision, taken with the Club’s best interests at heart. I’d like to thank Gavin personally for his hard work and dedication, and we all wish him well for the future,” Club Chairman Farook Kadodia stated.
The Club confirmed that Assistant Coach Pitso Dlada will take charge of the first team on an interim basis, starting with Wednesday’s fixture against Orbit College.
Durban City’s future plans
Kadodia added; “It is now the right time for change as we look to build a competitive side with the future in mind. The Club will utilise the upcoming break during the Africa Cup of Nations to conduct its appointment process for a permanent successor.
”This timeline is designed to allow the new Head Coach a clear period to prepare the squad for the second half of the season.”
Reacting to Durban City parting ways with Hunt’s following their loss to Orlando Pirates, former coach and Player Agent, Mike Makaab, told Igagasi FM that it was absolutely out of the blue.
“I know that there was speculation in the last few days about it but I have to be honest, I’m surprised.
“When I look at the Club, it’s a newly promoted [club] there are a number of first division players that have been promoted, some retained and placed in the PSL squad.

“The fact that ex-Maritzburg United (now Durban City) find themselves in eighth position in the league table and I think if I’m not mistaken they’ve accumulated 19 points – I’m surprised but again it’s easy to comment on the outside without knowing what has truly happened in the corridors leading up to this.
