The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) have issued a warning to motorists regarding the importance of adhering to safety regulations while driving.
This advisory comes in anticipation of increased traffic volumes leading up to the Easter festive period, emphasizing the need to avoid vehicle overloading to ensure safety on the roads.
GTP spokesperson Sello Maremane emphasized the importance for motorists to properly secure their loads and adhere to legal limits per the National Road Traffic Act, 93 of 1996.
He stated that key factors contributing to road crashes are overspeeding, unsafe overtaking, reckless driving, negligent driving, and overloading of vehicles, including trailers and public transport with many passengers.
“Overloading compromises vehicle stability, increases braking distance, increases the risk of tyre bursts, and significantly raises the likelihood of serious and fatal accidents.
“It is important for motorists to ensure that vehicles do not carry loads exceeding the prescribed height, width, or projection restrictions.
“In addition, passengers must only be transported within the approved capacity of the vehicle, and children must be seated in accordance with relevant safety regulations,” he added.
The Gauteng Traffic Police will intensify operations with other law enforcement agencies on key traffic routes, including the N1, N4, N12, and N3, which connect Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Durban.
Operations will target overloaded vehicles and high-risk violations on major routes and crime hotspots, imposing fines on non-compliant motorists and potentially impounding vehicles.
Motorists to ensure road user safety
Maremane urged road users to prioritize safety by remaining alert, practicing defensive driving, and avoiding speeding and risky overtaking.
He continued, “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strongly discouraged. All passengers should be seated and wearing seatbelts, and travel should be delayed during poor weather conditions when possible.

“Compliance with road signs and traffic signals is essential, and overloading of passengers or goods is both illegal and dangerous.”
Maremane highlighted that law enforcement agencies will conduct targeted operations to ensure road user safety during Easter, urging motorists to cooperate and prioritize safety.
