The inquiry into Advocate Andrew Chauke’s suitability as Director of Public Prosecutions: South Gauteng has been adjourned for the Easter recess.

The inquiry, led by retired Justice Bess Nkabinde, concluded its proceedings on 31 March after Advocate Chauke’s testimony. It is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, 8 April, at 09h00.

Advocate Chauke’s testimony was completed on Tuesday, encompassing a comprehensive process that included examination-in-chief, cross-examination, and re-examination.

This testimony was partially facilitated by Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC, who played a significant role in leading various segments of the proceedings.

Andrew Chauke’s case provisionally closed

Following the proceedings, the defense counsel for Advocate Chauke announced that the defense’s case has been provisionally closed.

This announcement came after the conclusion of Advocate Chauke’s testimony.

Subsequently, the inquiry proceeded to hear evidence presented by Major General Jan Mabula. His evidence pertains to an investigation involving the Cato Manor Organized Crime Unit.

It encompasses the methodologies employed by the task team he led, detailing how these processes interacted with both law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies.

The inquiry secretary and spokesperson Tiyisela Mpuzana announced that upon resumption, the evidence leaders are set to present additional evidence.

“This session is expected to include testimonies from Major General Johan Booysen and Advocate Shareen Riley.

“Additionally, the evidence leaders have the authority to summon further witnesses as deemed necessary for the inquiry,” he stated.

The Chairperson, Justice Nkabinde, has affirmed the Panel’s dedication to delivering its final report to the President by the conclusion of May 2026.
