Joburg's MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, has emphasised the necessity for the city to create a comprehensive database of senior citizens residing in informal settlements.

This initiative aims to highlight and prioritise these individuals for housing opportunities as they become available.

MMC Mabaso stated that the city intends to promptly provide housing to elderly residents following the eviction of illegal occupants from RDP houses, ensuring that these units do not remain unoccupied.

He indicates that the city plans to analyse the quantity of senior citizens residing in informal settlements against the number of eviction orders issued.

This comparison will enable the municipality to provide housing to elderly beneficiaries immediately following evictions.

Mabaso expressed concerns regarding individuals who have purportedly invaded RDP houses, which they are not entitled to occupy.

He highlighted that some of these occupiers are government officials, including employees of the City of Johannesburg.

Database gap unmasked

In the statement from Mabaso, it is indicated that certain occupants are contesting eviction orders through legal channels, which consequently hinders the eviction timeline.

He emphasised the importance of legal counsel to determine what criminal charges or cases could be pursued against individuals who illegally occupy government housing, underscoring the city’s commitment to addressing unlawful occupations effectively.

“The importance of considering the implications of actions taken by public officials, especially in relation to housing allocation processes,”
