Longest-serving member of parliament and Minister of Women, Youth, and persons with disabilities, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has expressed her intention to retire.

Dlamini-Zuma announced that she would be bowing out of parliament.

She was scheduled to attend the interview on Tuesday as part of the public representative list process ahead of the elections this year, however the 74-year-old stated that she will not be available.

The ANC is due to interview the last batch of members, including party president Cyril Ramaphosa, for its Parliamentary lists this week.

In a letter addressed to Chairperson of the Electoral committee Kgalema Motlanthe, Dlamini-Zuma thanked the branches who once again nominated her on the ANC’s 2024 National list.

The letter, dated January 12 comes on the eve of the ANC’s 112th birthday celebrations, known as the January 8 statement taking place in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.

“My sincere gratitude to the entire leadership of the African National Congress from national, provincial, regional, and branch levels for affording me the opportunity and support to serve the country and the people of South Africa as a public representative and as a member of cabinet since 1994.

“I also thank all the ANC Presidents under whose leadership and guidance I served as a member of the executive. I am eternally grateful for making it possible for me to serve the continent as the first woman at the helm of the African Union Commission and the first chairperson of the commission from the Southern African Development Community,” Dlamini-Zuma wrote.

She said it would not be necessary to schedule the interview for the 2024 national list as she has taken a decision to retire from being a member of the South African Parliament.

Dlamini-Zuma defied the party in a vote on the creation of an Ad-hoc committee to look into the Phala Phala saga.

She failed to appear in the National Assembly for the vote to impeach former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
