Unexpected mechanical breakdowns in several municipal compactor trucks caused a temporary reduction in available vehicles for waste collection, leading to service interruptions, according to an official statement.

“Although maintenance teams are working urgently to repair the affected trucks, the breakdowns resulted in a temporary backlog in waste collection services in some areas.

“The municipality has implemented a recovery plan to ensure no community is left without service. All missed waste collection rounds from Monday, 09 March, will be collected on Monday, 16, during the next collection cycle to clear the backlog and restore the normal schedule.

“Residents whose refuse was not collected should bring their bins back to their yards and secure bags tightly to prevent animal scavenging and littering while awaiting collection,” the statement read.

The institution said it is working urgently to restore full waste collection services and is committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment.

Accountability on Waste collection

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has vowed to hold the municipality accountable for failing to deliver essential services.

DA Councillor Thulani Mbana expressed serious concern over the violent Refengkgotso protest, highlighting community frustration with repeated poor service delivery.

The party condemned violence but attributes the protests to the municipality’s ongoing failure to deliver consistent services.

“Residents in Refengkgotso and Metsimaholo are suffering significant disruptions, notably a ten-day water shortage in Deneysville and Refengkgotso, which violates basic human rights.

“The municipality needs to urgently address residents’ complaints, as their failure to accept a memorandum from community organisers shows a disregard for citizen concerns,” he remarked.

Mbana stated that they will demand the municipality fulfil its constitutional mandate for democratic accountability, service delivery, development, budget management, and basic resident needs.
