Former South African Football Association (SAFA) acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Russell Patrick Paul, has been added as an additional accused in the fraud case against Danny Jordaan and three others.
This comes after investigations by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which linked the 64-year-old to the alleged offences currently before the court.
National Prosecuting Authority Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane said Paul conspired with the other accused to commit fraud and theft by authorising payments to Accused 4 for personal services rendered to Jordaan during Paul’s tenure as SAFA’s Acting CEO.
“Among other things, he allegedly approved payments to Accused 4 using SAFA funds, despite there being no contractual basis for such payments between SAFA and the service provider.
Conspiracy to commit fraud
“Paul faces charges of conspiracy to commit fraud or theft and fraud. He made his first appearance in the Palm Ridge magistrates’ court on Wednesday .
“He will appear alongside the other four accused when the main case resumes on 21 November,” she explained.
Mjonondwane added that the matter was remanded pending the outcome of a related high court application, in which the defence is challenging the admissibility of evidence obtained during a search and seizure operation conducted at SAFA House.

She continued; “The State did not oppose Paul’s bail application, as he had cooperated with the authorities after being informed of his impending arrest and continued to assist the Investigating Officer during the investigation. The Court granted him bail of R10 000.”
Mjonondwane highlighted that this development underscores their commitment to ensuring that all individuals implicated in criminal conduct are held accountable, and that justice is pursued without fear, favour, or prejudice.
