Vusimuzi Cat Matlala, a businessman facing murder charges, had his bail appeal denied by the High Court in Johannesburg.
Matlala was denied bail at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court. He then appealed this decision in the High Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s Gauteng Spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said they welcome the judgment.
She believes the court made the right choice in denying Matlala bail.
“This decision considers the serious charges and the risk to public safety. It also protects law enforcement officers, including the investigating officer and the prosecutors involved,” she added.
Matlala faces charges of Attempted Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Fraud and Attempting to Defeat the Ends of Justice.
The charges come from events that happened in Johannesburg from October 12 to 17, 2023. During this time, the accused is said to have planned to kill Tebogo Thobejane.
Court dismiss bail appeal
The State further alleges that they opened fire on Thobejane and two other complainants.
“The accused is also said to have laundered over R120,000 related to the murder plot. They submitted a fake invoice to hide where the money came from and to mislead the court.

“The Court dismissed the appeal. It found that Matlala is a flight risk. He also poses a danger to witnesses and the community. The State’s case against him is strong.
“Consequently, releasing him would be contrary to the interests of justice,” Mjonondwane explained.
