A Grade 12 girl pupil from Lakeside Secondary School in Palm Springs, south of Johannesburg passed away on Monday evening after reportedly vomiting while in bed.

According to reports, the pupil begun vomiting while in bed, and her condition worsened rapidly.
When her condition rapidly deteriorated, she was immediately transported to a local medical facility, where she was certified dead on arrival, Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed in a statement.
The department has conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the learner’s family, friends, educators, and the entire Lakeside Secondary School community during this very difficult time.Â
“Our Psycho-Social Support Unit, through its Institutional Support and Support (ISS) team, has been dispatched to the school,” said Steve Mabona, the departmental spokesperson.
Counselling and emotional support to pupils
This is to provide counselling and emotional support to learners and staff affected by this tragic incident, he added.
Mabona highlighted that this tragedy occurs during a critical period for matriculants.

He continued; “We wish to remind learners, parents, and school communities that emotional and psychological support services are available to anyone in need during the examination period.”
The South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.Â
