The Egyptian-giant Al Ahly sacked Spaniard-born mentor José Riveiro on Sunday following a string of poor results.
The 49-year-old, joined the 12-time African champions on a two-year contract after he unceremoniously left the Buccaneers’ ship towards the end of Premier Soccer League 2024/5 season.
Riveiro who joined Pirates in 2022, won two Nedbank Cups and three MTN 8 titles with the Soweto Giants.
During his three-month stint at the Pharaoh’s, Riveiro played seven games, drew four, lost two and managed a single win. The team currently sits in 12th place with five points.
On Saturday, Krunislav Jurcic’s side Pyramids FC rubbed salt into the wound by beating Al Ahly 2-nil in the league which spelled the end of Riveiro at the helm together with his coaching staff.
Al Ahly’s termination by mutual consent
“The club thanked Mr. José Ribeiro, the first football team’s technical director, and his assistant staff for the past period, and the contractual relationship was terminated by mutual consent.
“This came after the Planning Committee’s meetings attended by Captain Mahmoud El Khatib, the club’s president, and Captain Mohamed Youssef, the sports director, which began at 11:00 am today and continued for several hours, during which the reports submitted by both the sports director and the technical director were discussed, and in light of which the aforementioned decision was made.

“The committee, in its meeting with José Riveiro, confirmed its appreciation for what he has provided since assuming responsibility, and that he has put in a lot of effort, but the results did not help to complete the experience, at a time when the club seeks to achieve the great ambitions of its fans at the local and continental levels.
The Planning Committee continues its meetings to settle on the final vision for the technical staff that will lead the team during the next stage,” the statement read on their official website.
