The City of Johannesburg is conducting regional workshops in preparation for the Gauteng Spaza Shop and Informal Traders Expo Summit, scheduled for September 2026.
This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development (DED) and in partnership with Business Culture, seeks to bolster the informal trading sector in Gauteng.
The focus is on promoting economic development through community engagement, and capacity-building is essential for enhancing the role of informal trade in supporting the local economy.
Support for informal traders and spaza shop owners
“These workshops are designed to support informal traders and spaza shop owners by offering essential information, skills development, and access to growth opportunities for their businesses.
“The workshops form part of an ongoing programme of activations and capacity-building initiatives leading up to the main summit in September.
“They are designed to empower informal traders with knowledge on compliance, access to markets, business development, and digital transformation,” the statement read.
