Five Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) employees have been arrested by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

The arrests are linked to serious allegations, including fraud, theft, and tampering with essential infrastructure.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that suspects arrested are employees of the ELM, specifically from the Revenue and Electrical Departments, following a takedown operation conducted on Friday in Vanderbijlpark.
According to Mathe, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects operated a scheme involving misrepresentation.
They allegedly posed as authorised officials to municipal clients, claiming they had the authority to reconnect electricity supplies that had previously been disconnected by the municipality.
“Clients were allegedly instructed to pay various amounts of money directly into the suspects’ bank accounts in exchange for the illegal reconnection of electricity.

“The suspects are further alleged to have unlawfully reconnected electricity supplies without the authorisation of the municipality, resulting in the illegal use of electricity and financial losses to the municipality,” she said.
Brig. Mathe emphasised the Gauteng PKTT’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to hold accountable those who misuse their positions for personal financial gain.
