Teenagers to appear in court for deaths of initiates

Two teenagers aged 19 and 21, are expected to appear before the Lehurutshe magistrates’ court on Monday for murder.

The pair was arrested on Friday at Ntsweletsoku village after a multidisciplinary team made a follow up on two males who were reported missing in Motswedi and Lehurutshe police stations in December 2023.

According to North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, during the course of the investigations, the police found what appeared to be human skeleton bones in a plastic in the bushes near Mosweu village.

“Further investigation into the matter led to the arrest of the accused who were apparently in charge of the initiation school where the boys allegedly died, he stated.

Brig Mokgwabone added that investigations into matter are underway and the police cannot rule out the possibility of linking the accused to other cases including contravention of the Customary Initiation Act, 2021.

Meanwhile, a police Captain lost his life during a shootout at Kanyamazane car wash on Saturday night.

It is alleged that on the day in question, the late 44-year-old officer took his private car to the car wash.

“While his car was parked to be washed, he was bumped by someone who was also at the car wash.

“The matter was discussed amongst the two with the assistance of a CI police Sergeant, who was with the deceased. Agreement was made for payment of R5000 for the repairs of the damages.  

“It is further alleged that the police Sergeant drove the suspect’s car to the parents of the deceased pending the payment as agreed.

“After parking the car, they went back to the car wash. The police Sergeant left them there,” Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi explained.

She stated that an argument ensued between the suspect and the deceased.

Cpt Sekgotodi continued; “When the Sergeant came back, he found the police Captain shot.

“According to the witnesses, it is alleged that during the argument, the suspect took out a firearm and shot at the deceased.  He later succumbed to his injuries.

“In an attempt to apprehend the suspect, the suspect shot at the Sergeant who fired back. The suspect fled the scene on foot.”

She then urged anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the perpetrator to contact the police.
