Rand Water has issued a warning indicating that water consumption among several municipal customers has reached exceptionally high levels.

According to the water utility, this spike in usage is placing significant pressure on the water supply system, raising concerns about its sustainability and capability to meet ongoing demand.
Spokesperson Makenosi Maroo said despite Rand Water operating at maximum pumping capacity, there is a continual rise in demand, leading to record consumption levels.
“Sustained overconsumption is making it increasingly difficult to balance supply across the network and heightens the risk of
disruptions unless demand is brought under control.
“We therefore call on all municipal customers to implement immediate measures to reduce consumption and stabilise the system. We have repeatedly alerted municipalities to the high levels of consumption.

“Furthermore, ongoing engagements focus on coordinating mitigation strategies and identifying additional measures to strengthen the water supply system.
“Despite these efforts, persistent high consumption in certain areas continues to undermine the sustainable balance of supply across the network,” she stated.
Plea to decrease water consumption
Maroo has emphasized the necessity for all over-consuming municipal customers to decrease their consumption to align with their allocated volumes.
Adhering to this directive promptly is crucial to prevent potential system failures and ensure the continuity of supply.
She added, “Where necessary, we will take appropriate steps to protect the system and curtail supply water to over
consuming customers.

“Rand Water is duty bound to protect the bulk supply system and will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary. Water conservation is a shared responsibility.”
Maroo highlighted the importance of responsible water usage among municipalities, residents, and businesses, advocating for actions that promote a sustainable and equitable water supply for everyone.
