Kodwa, Mackay granted bail in corruption case

Zizi Kodwa and co-accused former EOH boss Jehan Mackay were granted R30 000 bail when they appeared at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime court on Wednesday.

The duo handed themselves over at Bramley Police Station after granted warrants of arrest were issued on June 4.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, the arrest of the pair was as a result of an ongoing investigation into corruption at state owned entities, and following recommendations by the Zondo Commission on State Capture.

“The two are to face charges relating to the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act,” she said.

Brig. Mbambo stated that after the commission released the fourth report in June 2022, where several recommendations required that law enforcement agencies should institute criminal investigations.

She added; “The National Head of the DPCI, established a State Capture task team to investigate identified matters.

“Amongst those recommendations, was a case involving an entity which specializes in the provision of technology services to businesses, IT services, systems integration, software, industrial technology and business process outsourcing received tenders from various Government departments.”

Mbambo said investigation revealed that during the period from 28 April 2015 to 2 February 2018, an executive on behalf of his entity enticed his co-accused to gratification amounting to R1 710 000 for the personal benefit.

“The monies are reported to have been utilised for the purchasing of a luxury SUV and payment of luxury accommodation,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the national head of the directorate for priority crime investigation, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya welcomed the arrest and indicated that the work of the DPCI investigators assigned to the State Capture Task Team and the Advocates from the NPA is commendable.

“The arrest of the two today bring the total number of those arrested by the DPCI in matters relating to State Capture to 29 which includes 21 natural persons and 8 juristic persons.

“The work is continuing and the other members of the DPCI shall continue to work with the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption in matters that are handled by that entity”.
