Following a tip-off police says five cattle and five calves were recovered leading to the arrest of two suspects for livestock theft.

The duo, aged 23 and 52 was arrested for possession of suspected stolen livestock in Welkom on Thursday. 

Free State police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng, said information was received from a concerned resident about suspected stolen livestock that was hidden near Oppenheimer Park Golf Course. 

“The information was operationalised at about 17:00 and the scene was visited where two men were found, matching the description provided by the informer, with five cattle and five calves. The suspects failed to disclose valid documentation to be in possession of the livestock,” Cpt Thakeng stated.

He added that the Odendaalsrus Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit will take over the investigation.

The pair is expected to appear in Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 16. 

Meanwhile, police are requesting public assistance in tracing the suspects who fatally shot a well-known musician in Botshabelo. 

According to Sergeant Sinah Mpakane, 41-year-old Tshepiso Golden Mofambere, popularly known as “Majara” was found on a bed with three gunshot wounds to the head.

“The mother of the deceased reported to the police that she was sitting outside when two suspects arrived and one of them was holding a firearm. The one with the firearm went inside the house while the other one stood outside with her,” Sgt Mpakane explained. 

She said the suspect went straight to the bedroom of the deceased where he was sleeping and shot him three times before going outside. The community came to assist the family and summoned the police.

Mpakane urged anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of suspects to contact the Crime Stop number.
