The SAPS in Gauteng seized counterfeit and illicit goods valued over R369,000 in West Rand and Sedibeng as part of intensified operations to combat the trade in such items across the province.

According to a police report, on Tuesday, the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, with assistance from brand protectors, conducted an operation in the West Rand District, visiting nine shops.
During a recent operation, Gauteng Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi reported the seizure of 1,379 items valued at approximately R60,500.
The confiscated items comprised counterfeit consumables, textiles, toys and games, cellphone accessories, as well as illegal substances such as poison, honey, and pharmaceutical products.
“On Wednesday, a similar operation was conducted in the Sedibeng District, specifically in Vanderbijlpark. Members visited eight shops and seized 2 449 items with an estimated value of R215 100. The seized items included counterfeit consumables, toys and games, cellphone accessories and illicit pharmaceutical products.
Dismantling counterfeit trade
“The following day, another targeted operation was executed in Randfontein, located in the West Rand District, where ten retail shops were inspected and resulted in the confiscation of 2,465 counterfeit items with an estimated value of R93 710.
“The seized goods included counterfeit consumables, textiles, toys and games, illicit poison, honey and pharmaceutical products.”

Nevhuhulwi stated that three operations led to the seizure of 6,293 items valued at R369,310 and that the efforts aim to combat the distribution and sale of counterfeit and illicit goods, thereby protecting legitimate businesses as well as consumer health and safety.
She emphasised the importance of public vigilance in combating the issue of counterfeit, contraband, and illicit goods.
