Suspect arrested for attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of illegal firearm

Three male suspects were arrested and detained at Jabulani police station on charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, superintendent Xolani Fihla while officers were conducting routine patrols on Wednesday, they encountered a shooting incident at the intersection of Elias Motsoaledi and Koma Road in Zondi, Soweto.

“A white Toyota Quantum with three occupants was seen fleeing the scene shortly after three gunshots were heard. A male pedestrian, who had been walking alongside the road, was found injured.

“The officers immediately pursued the fleeing vehicle and successfully apprehended it.

“Upon arrival of backup, the three occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, were ordered to lay down and were subsequently searched.

“A search of the vehicle revealed a black Norinco firearm hidden underneath the driver’s seat. It was further discovered that the vehicle was fitted with two different registration plates,” he remarked.

Fihla said the injured pedestrian, who had managed to walk to his nearby residence, was rushed to Bheki Mlangeni Hospital by a neighbor.

“He is reported to be in stable condition with three bullet wounds – one on the right shoulder, one on the upper body right side of the chest, and the last one at the back on the upper body.

“It was also reported that his phone was taken after the shooting. The Toyota Quantum was seized and booked at the SAPS Lenasia pound for further verification,” Fihla stated.
