Three accused appeared before the Koppies Regional Court on Thursday where they were sentenced on charges of attempted robbery and attempted murder.
Xolisa Mbundwana, 33, Sinesipho Mandoyi, 33, and Loyiso Nxiwa, 38, were each sentenced to R5000 fine or four years imprisonment on charges of attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years imprisonment fully suspended for five years.
According to police spokesperson warrant officer Amogelang Malwetse, the trio was arrested in February 2021 by members of the Klerksdorp based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in collaboration with Bidvest Protea Coin Security.
This comes after about 20 suspects had allegedly attempted to enter the premises of Great Noligwa Gold Mine near Vierfontein by breaking the wall.
“The suspects allegedly fled the scene following a shootout with security officers and one suspect was arrested inside the premises.
“Meticulous investigation by the Hawks led to the arrest of two suspects in the areas of Welkom and Kempton Park. The accused made a series of court appearances until they were convicted and sentenced,” he stated.
Meanwhile, A 42-year-old female suspect, a sergeant stationed at Tshamutumbu police station, will appear before Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, on charges of extortion.

“The victim alleged that on Sunday, while busy at the shop, a female suspect entered the grocery shop and requested to see the shop owner, who was not available at that time.
“He was then called, and he refused to talk to the suspect, Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said.

According to Mashaba, the suspect then decided to take groceries worth R954.00 and load into her parked motor vehicle, she added that if the owner does not pay the money that is owed, she will keep getting groceries until all of her money is paid.
“The owner of the shop alleged that during 2021, the suspect sold illicit cigarettes valued at R190 000 to him, and he paid through installments, the remaining balance was +/- R15 000, and he promised to pay the outstanding amount when he got money.
“The owner then reported the incident to the police, and the extortion case was investigated, the case was transferred to IPID for further investigation,” he added.
The suspect is set to appear before Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
