Midvaal Municipality, led by Mayor Peter Teixeira, conducted a joint operation in the CBD with Mayoral Committee Members to enforce by-laws and protect residents’ well-being.Â

Regular operations across Midvaal, in partnership with the South African Police Service (including the K9 Unit), Blue Shield compliance officers, health inspectors, building inspectors, the fire department, the engineering department, and other municipal officials, were conducted to ensure safety, order, and lawful business practices.
During the operation, Teixeira revealed that several serious contraventions were uncovered, posing significant risks to public health and safety.
“Unsafe and illegal business operations were observed, including unhygienic conditions violating health standards, selling expired food, and people residing on business premises.
“Furthermore, significant fire safety hazards were noted due to a lack of fire extinguishers and inadequate safety measures. Shops were also operating in buildings without municipal approval.

“A total of 12 notices were issued for unauthorised occupation, environmental health, and fire safety non-compliance during the operation,” he explained.Â
Drugs hotspots identified during joint operation
Teixeira stated that even shops were immediately closed for public safety risks and by-law violations, remaining shut until they meet municipal regulatory standards.
He added, “We also identified hotspots where drugs are allegedly being sold. These areas have been flagged and will be taken up with SAPS to ensure swift and decisive action.
“Enforcement operations will be intensified across the municipality to safeguard communities and ensure all businesses operate lawfully and responsibly.
