The African National Congress (ANC) is reeling with shock at the news of the untimely passing of its members from Mpumalanga Province involved in a bus accident in Dumbe, KwaZulu-Natal.

At least nine ANC members from Mpumalanga province died in a bus crash enroute from a manifesto launch in Moses Mabhida stadium, KwaZulu-Natal.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning while returning from the ANC’s launch of its elections manifesto – Mayihlome Rally 2024.

The ruling party’s spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the Deputy Chairperson of KwaZulu-Natal, Nomagugu Simelane, together with the ANC Provincial leadership of both Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal were deployed to the accident scene.

“They also went to the hospitals where they assessed the situation, visited the injured comrades and met with the families affected.

“Our comrades exemplified an unwavering commitment to the ANC by responding to the rallying call of Mayihlome.

“It is a true tragedy that there be such a loss of lives after such a memorable day. Their selflessness and commitment to building a better future for generations to come will forever be remembered.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the departed Comrades, their relatives, and friends,” she remarked.

ANC provincial leadership deployed to the scene

The ruling party’s spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the Deputy Chairperson of KwaZulu-Natal, Nomagugu Simelane, together with the ANC Provincial leadership of both Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal were deployed to the accident scene.

Bhengu-Motsiri added that they also wish those injured a speedy recovery and that further updates will be issued during the course of today.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said their members and various emergency services were dispatched to the scene of a bus accident on the R33 between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg in KZN. 

“According to a preliminary report, the bus was coming from the Moses Mabhida Stadium when it overturned.

“Nine people have so far been confirmed dead and scores injured. Those that are injured have been taken to various hospitals in the area for medical care,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters has since entered the frame to convey its message of condolences to friends and family of the deceased.
