Johannesburg Public Safety MMC, Mgcini Tshwaku has committed to ensuring safety and well-being of the residents following the deaths of seven people killed by a tavern owner in Orange Farm.
Speaking during the memorial service where he delivered condolences and support to the families, Tshwaku said taverns operating illegally have become a breeding ground for crime and violence in the communities.
“We have received numerous complaints about taverns operating without licenses, disregarding regulations, and contributing to social ills such as noise pollution, substance abuse, gender-based violence and murder,” he remarked.
Tshwaku further informed the mourners that in November through collaboration with the police and other law enforcement agencies will conducting regular raids and inspection.
He added; “We will be identifying and shutting down taverns operating illegally and crime fighting in areas such as Johannesburg CBD, Hillbrow, Orange Farm and Ivory Park.”

The MMC vowed to work with all political parties, local businesses, communities, and residents to promote responsible liquor trading practices.
He also urged the residents to report any suspicious activity or concerns about illegal taverns.
