According to the union, the reappointment is significant for KwaZulu-Natal, a region facing critical issues such as elevated violent crime rates, the presence of organized criminal networks, and substantial socio-economic challenges.

These factors create immense strain on law enforcement agencies tasked with maintaining public safety and order. In this context, stability, experience, and decisive leadership within SAPS are not a luxury but a necessity.

Provincial Secretary Nthabeleng Molefe praised General Mkhwanazi for his leadership during his tenure, highlighting his firm and disciplined approach to policing.

She emphasized his dedication to restoring both the authority and credibility of the South African Police Service (SAPS) within the province.

“His leadership has been characterized by a willingness to confront organized crime, strengthen operational coordination, and instill accountability within the ranks.

“These are critical attributes required to navigate the complex policing environment in KwaZulu-Natal.

“As POPCRU, we particularly recognize the importance of leadership that understands the conditions under which our members operate,” she remarked.

Strategic leadership

Molefe stated that their members are currently operating in highly challenging conditions characterized by resource limitations, extended working hours, and significant mental health pressures.

She emphasized that individuals in their roles encounter continuous threats associated with violent crime, which exacerbates the challenges they face.

“In light of this situation, it is essential for the Provincial Commissioner to provide not only strategic leadership but also organizational support to help navigate these difficulties.
