Former Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba has urged citizens to vote ANC out and says it has failed the South Africans for thirty years.

Mashaba said during his tenure as the mayor of Johannesburg, he made a commitment to remove people who hijacked buildings.

His view comes at the back of several fire incidents at hijacked buildings within the CBD.

A woman was arrested after allegedly igniting the deadly blaze that engulfed a building in Commissioner Street on Sunday, killing two people.

While a witness at the Khampepe commission of inquiry into the Usindiso building fire in Marshalltown, which claimed 77 lives, admitted to starting the deadly blaze and was subsequently arrested.

City manager Floyd Brink revealed that they are working to address the issue of illegally occupied buildings.

Three years into the mayoral position, Mashaba expropriated more than 150 buildings, the City then partnered with private companies to convert the buildings into student accommodation.

He added that residents would not see any prosecution on hijacked buildings as long as the ruling party is in government.

“Let’s go out and vote, we have an opportunity – a last one to remove this government.

“They have failed us for thirty years and anyone who still wants to believe that they can give them a chance I think they’ll be living in another world.

“South Africa will pay dearly because you think we have lost lives and we will lose more lives and all the buildings in the country will eventually collapse.
