Minister Majodina to visit water project in Emfuleni

Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina is expected to visit water projects in Hammanskraal and Emfuleni this coming weekend.

Majodina will be joined by her deputy, Sello Seitlholo, as part of ongoing efforts by the ministry to ensure acceleration of water and sanitation projects, especially in areas that are experiencing challenges due to inadequate infrastructure.

The department has conceded that Hammanskraal has been experiencing quality water challenges.

“Subsequently, the department, through its entity, Magalies Water, intervened and initiated the Klipdrift Package Plant to treat 50 megalitres per day to Temba Water Treatment Works.

“Magalies Water is also upgrading the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works from 42 to 92 megalitres per day, while work is being done to refurbish Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works.

“Minister Majodina will visit the Klipdrift Package Plant to get a progress report on its construction and when it will start operating,” the statement read.

According to the department, this will be followed by a site visit to the Babelegi Reservoir as well as the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Minister to assess sewage spills and water contamination

It further revealed that on Sunday, minister Majodina will assess the state of water and sanitation in Emfuleni Local Municipality where water and sanitation issues have also been a persistent problem. 

The visit is especially critical given the area’s history of sewage spills and water contamination. These issues have not only affected the local environment but have also posed serious health risks to residents.

“She will visit the Leeuwkuil Wastewater Treatment Works near Vereeniging and have an engagement with Rand Water on their intervention work in the area.

“The collaboration between the DWS, Magalies Water and Rand Water, and the City of Tshwane and Emfuleni Local Municipality is aimed at resolving water challenges that are affecting these areas.”
