The Minority Governing Parties (MGP) in Johannesburg have decided to recall Thapelo Amad from his role in the mayoral committee overseeing community development.

According to the party, the resolution was adopted during a meeting on Sunday.
The move comes after calls for the immediate removal of Ahmad in light of ongoing criminal investigations, particularly concerning charges filed by AfriForum relating to the alleged discharge of a firearm in a public and built-up area.
In May, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg submitted a formal request to the executive mayor for the immediate removal of Amad, pending the outcome of criminal investigations.
“This is conduct that, if proven in court, would constitute a serious violation of the law and a direct threat to public safety,” the DA said at the time.
MGP secretary Yongama Zigebe said the decision [to recall Amad] followed careful consideration and deliberation regarding the political representation of the MGP within the government of local unity.
“Amad was formally directed to submit his resignation from the position of member of the mayoral committee for community development by the close of business on Monday, 13 July 2026.
Gwamanda gets Minority Parties’ nod
“The Minority Governing Parties have further nominated Kabelo Gwamanda to replace Amad in the community development portfolio.”
Zigebe stated that the African National Congress (ANC) Greater Johannesburg Region has received official notification regarding the resolution.

He added, “The ANC has been asked to instruct its representative, the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, to implement the necessary changes without delay.
“The Minority Governing Parties remain committed to accountable leadership, political stability and the uninterrupted delivery of services to the residents of Johannesburg.”
