Joburg mourns the passing of Public Safety Chairperson

Message of condolences have continued to pour in following the passing of Joburg chairperson of the section 79 committee on public safety, Ian Mzoxolo Nonkumbi.

Nonkumbi who was a councillor for Ward 59 and also branch chairperson and former regional chairperson of Joburg SANCO died tragically after his life was cut short in a car accident on Wednesday.

The ANC Joburg caucus Ward 29 deputy chief whip, Brenda Dammie, said his untimely departure has left them deeply shocked and devastated as he was a devoted councillor, and a champion of change.

She highlighted that as chairperson of public safety, he fearlessly advocated for the well-being and security of his community.

“We salute Cllr Ian for his unwavering dedication, selfless service, and unrelenting commitment to the people of Johannesburg and Ward 59. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and comrades during this incredibly difficult time,” Dammie remarked.

Council speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu said Nonkumbi will be remembered for his valuable contributions to robust debates during council sittings and his passionate engagement on matters of critical importance in committee meetings.

Mthembu said his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

“Nonkumbi played a pivotal role in strengthening public safety initiatives and ensuring that the needs of residents were addressed with diligence and fairness. His leadership and determination left an indelible mark on the city and its communities.

She continued; “His lively spirit and personality brought positive energy to the council chambers and beyond. He was known for his jovial demeanour and his ability to connect with colleagues across political lines, often lightening the atmosphere with his sense of humour and warm personality.”

Unwavering commitment to public safety

Expressing her sorrow at Nonkumbi’s passing, Finance MMC Margaret Arnolds described him as a dedicated and a true servant of the people whose commitment to public safety and accountability was unwavering.

Adding that his work was marked with integrity, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility.

“His contributions extended far beyond his ward. He was a beacon of hope for many, and his vision for a safer Johannesburg will continue to inspire us all.

“We mourn the loss of a remarkable leader, but we also celebrate his legacy of service and dedication to making a difference,” she concluded.
