The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has issued a warning regarding increased vigilance following the recording of 18 fatalities in the province from December 1 to 5.

Preliminary data indicate that pedestrian fatalities are the most prevalent, with drivers following closely behind. In Johannesburg, three pedestrian deaths were reported.

Ekurhuleni experienced five fatalities, including three pedestrians, one driver, and one unidentified individual. Tshwane had six fatalities, comprising one pedestrian, four drivers, and one passenger.

Emfuleni reported two deaths, consisting of one pedestrian and one driver. Finally, Merafong recorded one fatality, which was a passenger.

Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC concerned

The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, expressed serious concern regarding the recent traffic incidents that resulted in the loss of eighteen lives within just five days.

She highlighted that these statistics represent families impacted by tragedy, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The MEC has called on drivers to exercise caution and pay attention to pedestrians, who are the most vulnerable road users.

She highlighted the alarming rate of pedestrian fatalities and urged drivers to slow down, stay vigilant, and practice safe road-sharing.

While enforcement measures in high-risk areas have been heightened, she emphasized the importance of citizen behavior in enhancing road safety.
