ButtaNutt (Pty) Ltd. has issued a product recall notification received by the National Consumer Commission (NCC).

The product recall stems from the detection of aflatoxin levels exceeding legally permissible limits, thereby failing to adhere to the quality standards mandated by the Department of Health’s Regulation R.1145 concerning fungus-produced toxins in food.
Aflatoxin may lead to health complications, including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
The affected products, namely Peanut (2.5kg, 1kg) and Chocolate Peanut (250g) products, were manufactured on 15 January 2026 and distributed.
These products were sold in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape
through various retailers.
Products recalled from retailers
These include various South African retail businesses, primarily food stores and supermarkets, including entities trading under the Spar brand (De Dekke Spar, Bedford Spar, Sonstraal Spar, and Spar Wilderness Village) and Pick ‘n Pay franchises in locations such as Kyalami, Sea Point, Cannon Rocks, Stellenbosch, Irene, Bryanston, Scottburgh, and The Pavilion.

NCC Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu strongly urged consumers to immediately cease consumption of the identified affected products and return them to the place of purchase for a complete refund.
“The NCC is engaging the supplier on the extent of the contamination, including potentially from the raw nuts supplier, and we are monitoring this recall in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act,” he said.
