This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and curb illegal arms distribution in the region.

On Thursday, the police carried out an intelligence-driven operation, resulting in the confiscation of three AK47 rifles, one 9mm pistol, and a substantial amount of ammunition.

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said this operation underscores the efficacy of intelligence-led policing in addressing weapon-related crimes.

The duo was discovered at a location where firearms were located. The retrieved weapons are set to undergo ballistic testing to ascertain if they have been used in any criminal activities.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in court on 16 March, facing charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Police unit cracks down on fake products

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Police Counterfeit Unit has successfully confiscated a total of 1,873 counterfeit items, which includes 1,379 counterfeit consumable goods and 494 counterfeit toys and handbags.

The estimated value of these seized items amounts to R398,370.00.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, police spokesperson, said on Tuesday a significant operation took place in Wierda Brug, located within the Tshwane District, where law enforcement officials conducted inspections at five different shops.

“This operation was aimed at targeting illicit activities and resulted in the successful seizure of various counterfeit goods. Among the items confiscated were counterfeit consumables, as well as toys and handbags, indicating a structured effort to combat the proliferation of counterfeit products in the area.”

In a separate operation, Cpt Sibeko revealed that on Wednesday, an operation took place in Boksburg North, Ekurhuleni District, where a team conducted inspections at four shops.

Adding that the operation led to the seizure of a significant quantity of counterfeit and illicit products.

He continued, “Specifically, the team confiscated 1,585 counterfeit consumables, 92 items of counterfeit clothing and shoes, as well as 507 illicit pharmaceutical products.

“In total, 2,184 items were seized, which had an estimated value of R122,000. This operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat the sale of counterfeit and illegal products in the area.

“These operations are integral to the South African Police Service’s ongoing initiatives in Gauteng aimed at combating the distribution and sale of counterfeit and illicit goods.”
