Vanderbijlpark cemetery in ruins: Emfuleni DA raises alarm

The Democratic Alliance in Emfuleni has expressed serious concerns regarding the continued neglect of the Vanderbijlpark Cemetery.

The allocation of substantial resources for the cemetery’s maintenance and upkeep signifies a concerning situation, highlighting potential issues regarding financial management or prioritization of funds within the community or organization responsible for the cemetery.

The party highlighted the discrepancy between the funds allocated and the actual condition of the site, indicating a failure in management and oversight that needs to be addressed.

Councillors Isaak Motloung and Dimakatso Xaba reported that in September 2025, the municipality had acquired a range of extensive maintenance equipment to enhance the upkeep of parks and cemeteries.

This equipment included mowers, slashers, blowers, bush cutters, and chainsaws, indicating a significant investment in the maintenance infrastructure within the community.

“Yet today, the cemetery remains overgrown and unsafe. Grass has reached extreme heights, posing risks to residents visiting or burying loved ones.

“Since January, ongoing oversight and reporting of the cemetery’s state to the municipality have been conducted. On March 28, we observed hazardous conditions and a lack of visible security at the entrance.

“Despite these findings being reported once more, the municipality has denied the existence of these issues and has yet to take action.

A million allocated for Vanderbijlpark cemetery maintenance

Motloung and Dimakatso Xaba emphasized that this is especially alarming given that approximately R1.16 million was allocated for cemetery maintenance in the last financial year.

“This money, however, was not fully spent—despite the need for it being evident. We will continue to hold the municipality accountable and demand that public funds and equipment are used properly to restore dignity and safety to all cemeteries and public spaces.
