During a media briefing on Wednesday, the premier announced the appointment of Nkululeko Dunga from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as the new MEC for Finance during a cabinet reshuffle.

Lesufi outlined the restructuring of the cabinet by reassigning several executive council members to different portfolios to improve governance and administrative efficiency.

Dunga was removed as finance MMC by Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphe Xhakaza in 2024, which led to tensions between the ANC and the EFF.

His appointment to the provincial government marked a significant milestone as he becomes the first member of the EFF to serve in a provincial executive position.

Lebogang Maile has transitioned from the finance sector to take on a new role overseeing the Department of Education and Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation.

In a related cabinet reshuffle, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko is set to assume leadership of the Department of Social Development, while Faith Mazibuko will move to the Health and Wellness Department.

According to the PTT, the move is part of broader initiatives aimed at enhancing governance and improving service delivery throughout the province of Gauteng.

Executive reshuffling to address residents’ needs

ANC Gauteng Provincial Spokesperson Mzi Khumalo emphasized that the current intervention is crucial for Gauteng, as it aligns with the provincial government’s intensified efforts to address residents’ needs.

“This initiative aims to accelerate essential service delivery priorities and implement developmental programs throughout the province.

“We consider the recent development to be a crucial and necessary action aimed at enhancing the government’s effectiveness, focus, and capacity to fulfill the expectations of the citizens of Gauteng.

“This comes in the wake of the successful approval of the 2025/2026 adjustment budget, which grants the essential mandate and resources required to advance this initiative,” he explained.

Khumalo expressed gratitude to the ANC national officials for permitting the Gauteng leadership to negotiate with different political parties. Adding that this engagement was pivotal in reshaping the Gauteng Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).

He continued, “The African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT) has officially endorsed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) decision to join the Governance and Policy Union (GPU).

“This development is indicative of a notable shift towards collaborative governance within the region, suggesting a move aimed at enhancing political cooperation and policy alignment between major political entities in Gauteng.

“We are actively collaborating with the EFF and various political parties in coalition governments across several municipalities in South Africa, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Mogale City, and West Rand District Municipality.

“Additionally, our partnership with the EFF extends to the Sedibeng District and Emfuleni Local Municipality, indicating a strategic alliance to further our political objectives in these regions.”

Khumalo emphasized that the GPU reconfiguration should be viewed within the larger framework of developing a stable, effective, and responsive provincial government.

“This government aims to address fifteen key priorities faced by communities, which include unemployment, crime, inadequate infrastructure, backlogs in service delivery, and various socio-economic challenges.

“At the center of this work must be a shared commitment to putting the people of Gauteng first, rising above narrow political interests, and focusing on the urgent task of building a provincial government that works for the people of Gauteng,” he concluded.
