Maskandi legend Scebi Dlamini dies in tragic Richards Bay accident

The music fraternity is reeling with shock following the passing of renowned maskandi artist Scebi Dlamini on Sunday.

Inkosi Yamagcokama, as he is popularly known, died in an accident that took place at the traffic signal near Melomed Hospital in Richards Bay. This incident has left fans and fellow musicians mourning the loss of a prominent figure in the genre.

According to Siboniso Duma, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has confirmed a tragic incident involving severe injuries that led to a fatality at the accident scene.

The team from the RTI, in collaboration with Umhlathuze Traffic, the South African Police Service, and various emergency rescue services, made extensive efforts to save an individual who suffered severe injuries.

“Unfortunately, the individual did not survive and was declared dead at the accident scene. One of the three occupants who were taken to the hospital has unfortunately departed.

“We express our deepest condolences to the mother of the occupant, and we wish those two other victims a speedy recovery.

“At this stage, we wish to confirm that the accident is now handled by the SAPS accident unit. They are better placed and equipped to investigate the cause of this horrific accident.

Maskandi lovers in mourning

“The RTI and all categories of staff in both the department of transport and human settlements have joined Maskandi lovers in mourning the sad departure of Inkosi Yamagcokama,” he remarked.

MEC Duma described Inkosi Yamagcokama as a significant figure in South Africa, known for his exceptional contributions to Maskanda music and his humility.

Duma added, “He was a remarkable artist who carved for himself a niche in the hearts and minds of millions of Maskandi music lovers. He was admired for his humility and for putting Umsinga on the map.

“As we mourn with a deep sense of sadness his passing, we are confident that his legacy will inspire many aspiring Maskandi musicians to improve this genre, which is growing in leaps and bounds.”
