Kwaito legend General has died

Kwaito legendary artist and Chiskop member General has died following a battle with cancer.

General Thatha Zonke (GTZ) real name Siphiwe Sibisi underwent major surgery for his battle against cancer where he died in hospital on Sunday.

The 49-year-old was a founder member of the group Chiskop with the late Mduduzi “Mandoza’ Tshabalala, Sizwe “Lollipop’ Motaung, and Sibusiso “SB-Bless’ Thanjekwayo. 

The group which was discovered and managed by King of Kwaito Arthur Mafokate shot to fame in the nineties with hit songs like Klaimer, Abasazi, and Abantwana. 

SB Bless and Lollipop passed away in 2003, while Mandoza passed away in 2016.

In a statement issued, Sibisi’s family confirmed the passing of the last living member of the group, who was known as the general of kwaito music.

“The family of Siphiwe “General GTZ” Sibisi announces with deep sadness our great loss suffered through the passing of our dear one, after hospitalisation where he underwent major surgery.

“Despite showing some signs of recovery, he took a turn for the worse over the past few days and finally lost his brave battle earlier today, 29 September 2024.

“We wish to thank all those who loved and supported him during all his years as a prominent and pioneering music entertainer of our beloved South African people.

“May his beautiful, kind spirit live on through the legacy of his Kwaito music,” the statement read.

Following the news of his death, message of condolences started to pour in.
