Eskom urge consumers to use electricity sparingly

Eskom has urged South African to continue using electricity sparingly as demand for electricity increased and warns that things may get worse.

The power utility says this will reduce pressure on the grid as the country is currently dealing with stage five load shedding.

While the energy expert warn of higher stages of rolling blackouts.

The entity says a unit each at Kendal Matla, and Matima power stations have delayed in returning to service necessitating the continuous implementation of stage six load-shedding until further notice.

Spokesperson Daphney Mokoena says using electricity sparingly will assist in ensuring that emergency generation reserves are replenished.

“Due to the cold weather, we appeal to all members of the public to reduce the electricity demand by switching off non-essential appliances, mainly geysers, swimming pool pumps and electric heaters.

“The evening peak forecast for today is 29 609MW and yesterday’s demand at evening peak was 33 423MW, higher than the forecast demand.

“The reduction will continue to assist in alleviating pressure on the system and avoid higher stages of load-shedding”.

Mokoena thanked those who do heed the call to use electricity sparingly and efficiently.
