At least seventy seven people died when fire engulfed a building in Johannesburg CBD.

Gauteng premier Panyaza hopes to have the final report to what caused the fire at a Johannesburg building by April 2024.

Lesufi has established a commission of inquiry which will look into the disaster which claimed seventy seven lives.

He said the inquiry into the fire at the hijacked building will be divided into two phases.

The first one will look into the cause of the fire, while the other the prevalence of the hijacked buildings in the province.

The inquiry will be chaired by retired constitutional court justice Sisi Khampepe.

Lesufi defended the appointment of the commission saying it’s crucial for everyone to get answers about the Marshalltown tragedy.

While he conceded that South African are tired of never-ending commissions, he believes this one will bring closure to families because it will be guided by evidence.

“The financial support will be limited and I know that South Africans are commissioned-fatigued with so many commissions and so many costs associated with commissions.
