The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) President Collen Malatji has declined nomination by party branches to go to parliament.
He follows in the footsteps of Minister of Women, Youth, and persons with disabilities, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who also declined nomination and announced his retirement from National Assembly.
The 31-year-old became the youngest MP to join the house in 2019 and vacated his position as an MP after being elected unopposed at the league’s 26th national conference in July last year at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
In a letter addressed to Chairperson of the Electoral committee Kgalema Motlanthe, Malatji thanked the branches who nominated him on the ANC’s 2024 candidate selection process for National list.
“After careful consideration and reflection, I have decided to respectfully decline the nomination. It was a difficult decision to make, as it will not best fit my current goals and aspirations.

“I believe it would not be fair to accept the nomination knowing that my goals do not align with the requirements of being a member of parliament,” the letter read.
Malatji expressed his gratitude for the time and energy the electoral committee and all branches that nominated him and said he trust that the best candidates will be selected.
Earlier this year, the controversial Malatji launched an attack on former ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule accusing him of being used and then discarded by the Gupta criminal network, likening him to a condom.
Although it remain unclear what prompted Malatji’s sudden and direct attack on Magashule. However, his remarks have not been well received by some, with one user responding, “You’re also a condom currently in use, as soon as some liquids get stuck inside you, dustbin will be your home.”
