Joburg council speaker Margaret Arnolds has confirmed that chief whip Sithembiso Zungu has been discharged from hospital.
Zungu sustained injuries during a shooting incident that left a bodyguard and Rand Water’s executive Teboho Joala dead in Zakariyya Park on Monday.
The incident took place in the south of Johannesburg where the water utility held an event to donate school shoes and uniforms where over 70 learners were witness to the alleged hit.
Council speaker extended her gratitude to the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene and doctors who tended to the chief whip.
Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has condemned the shooting incident and said the Tactical Response Units of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) are actively investigating the incident alongside the police.
“The incident once more gives us a shattering impression of the lawlessness and brazenness with which criminal elements terrorise our residents and society.
“To have such a tragic incident occur in broad daylight and in the presence of community members and children is beyond one’s comprehension and belief.

“The senseless killing of people and officials must be brought to an end, as a matter of urgency,” said Gwamanda.
The mayor added that the city’s social service department are mobilized and will be providing psychosocial support to the community and children who witnessed this gruesome incident.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng has called for swift arrest in the assassin-style shooting of Zungu.
The party’s spokesperson on public safety, Michael Sun reportedly told IOL that they will conduct their own inquiries with the involved community members in bringing any useful information to the police to assist in their investigation
“While details of the incident are still unknown, the horrifying manner in which the shooting took place is cause for alarm.
“The fact that such a heinous crime could occur with young children in the firing line underscores the alarming rate of crime and violence within our communities,” said Sun.
