Al Jama-ah affirms stance on objections received by the IEC

Al Jama-ah has reiterated its call upon the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to address the 570 objections received with utmost transparency and diligence.

In a statement issued, the party stated that in line with our unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values, Al Jama-ah emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring that the electoral processes are conducted freely, fairly, and credibly.

“To this end, we urge the IEC to engage in thorough scrutiny of all objections, ensuring that every legitimate concern is addressed comprehensively.

“It is imperative that the electoral process remains transparent and inclusive, with all stakeholders having full confidence in its integrity.

“In pursuit of transparency and accountability, Al Jama-ah proposes that the IEC conduct a public recount, with representatives from various political parties acting as observers.

“This measure will not only enhance the transparency of the electoral process but also serve to instil public trust in the outcome.

The party added that it firmly believes that a recount is essential to safeguarding the credibility of the election results.

It further said by undertaking this proactive step, the IEC can demonstrate its unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

“As the custodian of democracy, it is incumbent upon the IEC to uphold the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and accountability. Al Jama-ah remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting measures that strengthen the democratic fabric of our nation,” the statement read.

Speaking during a media briefing at the national Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand on Saturday evening, commission chairperson Mosotho Moepya said they were dealing with the objections and that this might increase.

“As we consider objections before us, there will be those that require or will implicate the reopening of edit windows for results to be corrected.

“An edit window is a facility that allows the commission to effect corrections where there are discrepancies. We will work through everything before us carefully and thoroughly,” said Moepya.
