The Democratic Alliance has called for the suspension of Emfuleni municipality worker accused extortion.

This follows the arrest of the said worker employed in the municipality’s water and sanitation department, Metsi-a-Lekoa alongside the African National Congress branch chairperson in Sedibeng.
The party expressed delight at the latest developments relating to the arrest of the duo who are being charged with allegations of extortion and further called for expedition of this matter.
“We demand the municipality to suspend the employee while the case is ongoing and for the court to resolve this matter as soon as possible,” DA Emfuleni caucus leader, Duncan Mthembu cited.
He highlighted that these recent developments are an indication that the ruling party is failing to instill discipline in the institution and it further exposes their lack of understanding when it comes to the “the state and party dichotomy”.
Mthembu added; “This is also a clear indication that the government of the day is failing to develop intact internal controls as this incident is taking place a week after three suspects were arrested for ‘Cash for Jobs” in the same municipality.”

He emphasised that the DA will always fight against any form of criminality within the Emfuleni municipality as criminality affects residents and robs them of fair opportunities.
“We urged the residents of Emfuleni to contact the authorities with any form of evidence or information of similar crimes. Together we will tackle the elements of criminality in our municipality,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, police commissioner Fannie Masemola said the police have implemented a strategy to combat crime, specifically addressing the recent surge in extortion.
Addressing parliamentary police portfolio committee on Wednesday, Masemola outlined plans to tackle the issue.
