The Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, has strongly condemned the senseless killing of an e-hailing driver in Johannesburg.

In a video that has been widely shared on social media, an e-hailing driver was shot and killed in Berea on Wednesday afternoon.

According to reports, the driver was robbed off his monies, cellphone and his car keys were also taken.

It is alleged that one suspect tried to pull the trigger, however the gun jammed.

The suspect decided to step out of the car, it is said he was asking for his car keys. The second suspect was seen on the video shooting at the driver.

MMC Tshaku said they are deeply disturbed by this heinous crime, allegedly committed over a cellphone.

He revealed that the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating the incident.

“We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice. We will not tolerate such brazen acts of violence in our city.

“Rest assured that high density operations are coming in Hillbrow that has been a den of drug dealers and thugs. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Tshwaku.

The MMC highlighted that the City is committed to enhancing safety measures for e-hailing drivers and the public.

He added; “We will increase visibility and patrols in hotspot areas, collaborate with e-hailing companies to improve driver safety and engage with the community to promote vigilance.”
