Johannesburg Zoo is giving senior citizens free access to the zoo for the whole month of October.

The City Parks and Zoo are inviting all pensioners to come and enjoy the unforgettable experience.

However, they will get free entrance only during the week. 

It is set the special initiative aims to provide their valued senior citizens with an unforgettable experience, connecting them with some of nature’s most majestic creatures.

Pensioners and retirement homes are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day of exploration, education, and connection with the Johannesburg Zoo’s most rare and extraordinary species, including the Big 5. This limited offer is valid until October 31, 2024.

Supporting the growing senior population, October is set aside by the United Nations to honour and appreciate senior citizens under this year’s theme, “Aging with Dignity.” 

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson, Jenny Moodley said this serves as a reminder to respect and support the health and fulfilment of our elders.

With approximately 9% of South Africans aged 60 and older, and life expectancy rising to 65 years, it is essential to equip elders with the resources to enjoy their golden years with health, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

In 2024, the rise in chronic illness among seniors has become a pressing concern. The City says encouraging elderly to enjoy the outdoors and maintain a well-balanced health regime is vital. 

Families urged to bring elderly to the Zoo

Families are urged to bring their aging relatives to the Joburg Zoo. For ease of movement, golf carts are available for hire inside the facility.

“They must remember to pack a picnic basket, sunscreen, sun hats, camping chairs, and comfortable shoes,” said Moodley.

The general public, including children, will pay the normal entrance fees of R126 per adult, R74 per child, R74 for students (weekdays only with student card), R47 for school groups (per person on Mondays to Fridays), and R47 for differently abled persons.

This offer does not include planned events at the Joburg Zoo, such as Zoo Trot, and is only valid for entrance to the zoo on weekdays.  

For many visitors, this is a chance to hear the roar of a lion, the trumpeting of an elephant, or to get up close and marvel at the agility and beauty of the zoo’s big cats, including the cheetahs, lions, and tigers. 

Moodley added by saying they are committed to making “this experience memorable for all our revered senior visitors.
