The United Democratic Movement (UDM) councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Yongama Zigebe led a delegation of UDM members to the 35th Annual Joburg Pride in Sandton this past weekend.

This year’s Pride celebration highlighted the power of inclusivity and the ongoing journey toward equality for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Zigebe said participating in Joburg Pride, an event symbolising solidarity with South Africa’s LGBTQIA+ community aligns with the UDM’s commitment to human rights, dignity, and freedom for all citizens.
“Pride Month is not only a celebration but also a reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and the work that remains to achieve genuine equality in our society.
“It is a time to reflect on the resilience and courage within the LGBTQIA+ community and to stand united against discrimination and prejudice. The UDM has long upheld a stance that embraces diversity and firmly opposes all forms of discrimination.
“As an organisation that believes in equal rights and inclusion, we support and promote policies that protect the freedoms and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, working to ensure safe, welcoming spaces for all South Africans,” he remarked.
Joburg Pride… a society where everyone is embraced
Zigebe emphasised the importance of Pride Month and its role in promoting awareness, acceptance, and allyship across communities.
He added; “This month, we celebrate not only the LGBTQIA+ community but also the values of freedom and human dignity. Joburg Pride reminds us of the progress made and the path forward toward a society where everyone is embraced and respected for who they are.”

Zigebe highlighted that the UDM remain committed to fostering a society where diversity is valued, and inclusion is embraced.
“We will continue to advocate for policies that enhance equality and protect the rights of all communities, ensuring that every South African has the right to live openly and safely,” he concluded.
