The Disabled People South Africa (DPSA) has reaffirmed its support for Miss South Africa 2024 Mia le Roux following withdrawal from Miss Universe pageant.

Born in the Free State on 27 June 1995 and raised in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape – Le Roux was crowned Miss South Africa 2024 on 10 August, becoming the first differently abled person to wear the crown.
At the time of her crowning, she was working as a marketing manager for a startup company and studying for a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing part time at Unisa.
“I have made it my mission to spread awareness and educate wherever I am able about the challenges faced by the deaf. We are not in need of sympathy; being deaf does not affect our intelligence and capability.
“We just need a little bit of help in terms of accessibility and inclusivity such as subtitles on TV shows, advertisements and sign interpreters at live shows.
“I aspire to eventually help provide cochlear implants to those who cannot afford it and give them the same gift my community has given me,” she expressed.
The organization advocating for disability rights and inclusion, said the commitment comes after Le Roux’s courageous decision to withdraw from the 73rd Miss Universe pageant due to health reasons.
Mia’s legacy extends far beyond the pageant
DPSA national chairperson, Patrick Mahlakoane, said Mia’s decision to prioritize her health demonstrates her strength, resilience, and dedication to self-care. He added that her legacy extends far beyond the pageant.
“We commend her for putting her well-being above all else and acknowledge the immense pressure that comes with representing a nation on the global stage.
“We acknowledge Le Roux’s groundbreaking participation as the first deaf contestant in Miss Universe history and her invaluable contributions to promoting disability awareness, empowerment, and inclusion.
“Her tireless advocacy has inspired a nation, challenged stereotypes, and paved the way for future generations of individuals with disabilities to participate in mainstream platforms,” he emphasized.
Mahlakoane highlighted DPSA’s support stating continued partnership with Le Roux in her advocacy for disability rights and empowerment and joint initiatives to promote inclusive education, accessibility, and employment opportunities
