The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Tactical Response Unit arrested a 21-year-old male suspect after a high-speed chase in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday.

The operation, in partnership with SAPS Gauteng Highway Patrol and Johannesburg Central SAPS, was launched following intelligence regarding suspects planning a business robbery in Johannesburg CBD during peak rush hour.
In a statement, JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla revealed that the operational team, which included the JMPD TRU, underwent a briefing and was strategically deployed as part of a coordinated effort.
While monitoring the area, officers spotted a white Suzuki Dzire matching the description provided.
“When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle using sirens and blue lights, the driver accelerated, leading to a high-speed chase.
“The pursuit ended at the corner of Mooi and Anderson Streets when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and collided with a silver Toyota Starlet.
“Upon approaching the vehicle and conducting a search, officers discovered three rounds of live ammunition. The vehicle was fitted with false registration plates. Various sets of alternative number plates were found inside the vehicle,” he explained.
